BAHÍA DE BIZKAIA GAS
There were two main reasons that give rise to the need for a regasification terminal:
- The high penetration of natural gas in the energy demand in the Basque Country, higher than in Spain as a whole and in line with European demand.
- The importance of its supply conditioned by importation through a gas pipeline and being at the tail end of the network.
Bahía de Bizkaia Gas (BBG), which will regasify liquefied natural gas imported in gas tankers, was created to provide a solution to this situation.
Its aims are as follows:
- To improve the gas supply system inside the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country in Spain and Europe.
- To diversify supply.
- To be used as a source of energy not only for the industrial, domestic and commercial natural gas market, but also for the Bahía de Bizkaia Electricidad combined cycle power plant.
With a final investment of 264 million euros, Bahía de Bizkaia Gas took 30 months to build and came into service in August 2003. By means of a turnkey contract, Technigaz, Initec and Sofregaz formed the industrial consortium which took responsibility for construction of the terminal.
The terminal has a gas output capacity of 800,000 m3 (n) per hour. The arrival of the first gas tanker, the British Innovator, took place on 8 August 2003, and after the commissioning of BBG, the plant came into commercial operation just a few months later.
